DPRTE 2026: Conversations, insights and a sector in transition

BiD Masters attended DPRTE this year, and the event proved to be an invaluable opportunity to meet organisations from across the defence ecosystem. Throughout the day, the team spoke with companies of all shapes and sizes, from SMEs and tech start‑ups to the big primes, and heard from influential voices shaping the future of UK defence procurement.

The conversations reflected a sector undergoing rapid change and looking for practical ways to respond. Defence reform (and the Procurement Act driving much of it) is reshaping the commercial environment. There is more transparency and structure than ever before, which should help to relieve increasing pressure on suppliers to navigate a growing number of compliance hurdles.

SMEs feel the shift more than most. Many are exceptional at what they do, but bidding isn’t their day job. They are trying to deliver for customers while interpreting complex procurement language, unclear pipelines and requirements that can be difficult to decipher. The result is that some overstretch on the wrong opportunities, while others miss the right ones entirely. It’s ironic given one of the main goals of reform is to increase SME participation in the defence supply chain.

It was encouraging to see how the MOD is taking steps to make opportunities more accessible to SMEs. They’re simplifying terms and conditions, standardising approaches, opening pathways for early market engagement and creating channels for fast‑paced innovation. And, there was clear recognition from the MOD that some of the best innovation in defence comes from SMEs.

During the event, BiD Masters held constructive discussions with senior representatives from both the Defence Office for Small Business Growth and DE&S, focusing on how SMEs can engage earlier and more effectively in defence procurement. Their commitment to championing SMEs was clear and BiD Masters will be working to amplify that message across the sector.

Reform as an opportunity

One of the key takeaways from DPRTE is that defence reform should be seen as an opportunity, not a barrier. But it is only an opportunity for organisations that understand how to navigate it. This is particularly important for SMEs and tech start‑ups, whose innovation and agility are essential to the future of UK defence, and whose contributions the MOD is increasingly seeking to unlock.

Primes and major suppliers have a role to play here. When they share upcoming needs, collaborate early and provide genuine supply‑chain visibility, SMEs can prepare, partner and position themselves effectively. Stronger collaboration across tiers strengthens the entire defence ecosystem.

Supporting SMEs to compete and win

It is clear the UK defence sector is committed to investing in national security, backing British companies and increasing SME participation. But for SMEs to seize that opportunity, they need clearer pipelines, better collaboration and support that helps them focus on the right opportunities – not every opportunity. Simple, repeatable internal processes can prevent bidding from overwhelming day‑to‑day work, and early support is almost always more effective than trying to fix a bid at the last minute.

This is where BiD Masters plays its part. As CEO Peter Coyle explains: “Defence reform isn’t something to fear. It’s an opportunity to raise the standard of bidding across the sector. But that only works if suppliers understand the rules of the game.”

BiD Masters helps SMEs participate confidently in defence procurement by signposting relevant MOD opportunities and supporting them to get their accreditations, policies and evidence “combat‑ready” for bidding. As Peter puts it: “Our mission is to provide practical, affordable expertise exactly when and where SMEs need it. The more SMEs we help into the market, the stronger, more innovative and more resilient the defence supply chain becomes.”

Defence reform is reshaping the landscape, but with the right guidance and collaboration, it’s an opportunity waiting to be seized.
